As a teenager, I used Ultra Glow skin cream as a gentle and effective way to fade skin discolorations and to achieve a more even skin tone.

Because of its skin softening qualities, Ultra Glow had always been one of my favorite skin creams.

However lately, I've been very unfortunate in my attempts to locate this product in my neighborhood. While I've found Ultra Glow soap in ample quantity, the Ultra Glow skin cream has been very difficult to find. Over the past few years, I've visited several area beauty supply stores to try to locate Ultra Glow.

After not finding the products, I settled on purchasing various other skin creams. I've tried Artra, Ambi, Nadiola and Escoterica.

While this was an expensive endeavor, none of these skin creams softened my beautiful brown skin as well as Ultra Glow had. Finally, I asked one of these beauty store owners what gives? Why has it been so difficult to find a jar of Ultra Glow lately? Surprisingly, the beauty supply store owner was happy to share what he knew about the scarcity of this fine product. "We can only purchase and stock 2 or 3 of these products at time because they go bad quickly," he explained in broken English, "and the manufacturer will only sell the Ultra Glow cream by the dozen. We can't afford to buy a whole case when half of the case will go bad before we've had a chance to sell it."

Because I've used Ultra Glow skin cream for years, I, too, have had the unfortunate experience of having it go bad on me and so, I knew that the retailer's story was accurate.

So, I located the Ultra Glow manufacturer's website, https://keystone-labs.com and attempted to purchase the product there. I was terribly shocked to realise this product which is ordinarily $6.29 would ultimately cost me $12.24 with shipping.

But, knowing that preservation of my beauty has no price, I will pay that $12.24.

Straightening Curly Hair Weave

To straightening curly hair weave you will need either a straightening comb and/or a flat iron. First, of course, wash the weave hair and condition. Blow dry the hair weave as straight as possible without disturbing the weft. If you have a dome hair dryer, dry your roots by sitting under that.

Lightening hair weave
To lighten a hair weave color, you will need a color booster and bleach. We prefer Miss Clariol's hair bleaching agent. Mix the hair color, 40 volume developer, and bleaching agent carefully. Place the hair weave in tin foil and apply the mixed color. The colorizing will have been successfully completed anywhere from 10 minutes to 30 minutes depending upon the color. When you have achieved the color you want, wash the weaving hair THROUGHLY. And, condition it. Yes, you can and should condition weaving hair. Allow the a hair to air dry overnight. Then it is ready for use.

Darkening hair weave
To darken hair weave you will simply need a 20 volume developer and hair color. Mix these two together. Then apply to weave hair. I have found it best to apply dark colors to weave hair in a plastic bag. Allow the color to set until anticipated results are achieved. Most of the time, hair weave colors very quickly when you are attempting to darken it. Follow the steps above for washing, conditioning and drying hair weave after coloring.

3 Don’ts for Processed Weave Hair

Don’t ever relax your hair yourself. I see so much damage due to over-processing because product is being applied to hair that is already relaxed. This leads to dry brittle, fragile hair that eventually breaks. Don’t get your weave hair relaxed too often. This also leads to over processing. Don’t apply relaxer and permanent color on the same day.

Although I recommend professional relaxer applications, I understand that everyone can’t afford a stylist. Get a girlfriend to do it for you. It’s almost impossible to relax your own hair and keep the relaxer off hair that’s already been processed and only relax the new growth. If you think that some overlapping may happen, apply conditioner to the previously relaxed hair to coat it and help prevent damage.

Wait at leas 6 to 8 weeks to relax your new growth. If it’s looking a little rough, use a pressing comb to straighten the new growth. Press only the areas that will be seen, like you’re edges and along any part. Not only will this keep your hair healthier, but you’ll keep the fullness that’s sometimes lost when it’s freshly relaxed.

Always wait a week or so after relaxing to use a permanent color. Rinses are okay to use even on the day of your relaxer. Remember to color only the hair that hasn’t been treated before unless you are changing hair colors.

There are three types of hair color, permanent, semi-permanent and temporary.

To apply the permanent haircolor the scalp should be examined for any abrasions. (If the scalp is not normal do not apply hair color). A strand and patch test must be done first to test your hair and skin’s reaction to the color. If there are no problems then proceed carefully. The hair is then sectioned into four parts. A protective cream is then applied to the skin around the entire hairline. Protective gloves should be worn while applying color.

Mixture should be applied to the darket part of the hair using 1/8 inch sectioning. Apply the mixture to the hair from roots to ends. After all the mixture has been applied to all sections, pile the hair on top of the head and allow it to process for specified time. The mixture should not be rubbed into the scalp. After achieving the desired shade, rinse and shampoo. Remember, if you have a relaxer, wait at least 4 weeks to apply color.

1) Prep your hair

Prep your hair by cornrowing the full head. Secure the “Stitch-n-Go” to the perimeter of the head by using hairpins.

2) Stitching the weaving hair

Using a “C” shaped needle and thread, begin stitching the pre-styled weave at the front and work your way around the perimeter.

3) Once you have reached the back, make sure the front of the cap is even and aligned with the front of the head.

4) Rethread the needle and beginning stitching the top of the cap to the cornrows. Add as many stitches as need to ensure that the cap is secure and tight on the cornrows.

Hair color is a very important consideration in choosing weave in hair. Often times, we don’t REALLY know what our hair color is. That is, when we are outside, our hair color may look much lighter than it is when we are indoors, or at night, or after we have just washed our hair.

Additionally, new growth can cause us some problems when choosing a good match to our weave in hair, particularly if our hair is colored/processed. It is for this reason that I generally recommend cutting a small patch of your own hair to take with you to the beauty supply store. This way, you will not need to hold the weaving hair next to your own and look in the mirror in an attempt to determine the best match. That is a very faulty way to try to make a good match to your own hair.

Using the patch method I spoke of earlier, you can make a more objective comparison between your hair and the weave in hair. If while you are at the beauty supply store, you get to weave in hair sample that are very close to one another, and you are torn between which one to buy, you might ask if you may take both of them out into the sunlight to make a better comparison. I, personally, prefer purchasing both packs of hair if they are a very close match.

Choosing Your Weaving Hair

When doing a weaving hair, it is important to purchase weaving hair that is as close to your own grade of hair as possible. “Grade of hair” simply means your hair type. This means, is your hair thick, thin, kinky, straight, curly, etc. That is, you must ask yourself, “what is my hair like after I have washed and blow dried it?”. Your “grade of hair” will be determined by that answer. If after you have washed and air dried your hair, when you touch your hair and it is straight? If so, then the grade of your hair is considered to be “straight”. If after you have washed and air dried your hair, your hair feels curly, then your grade of hair is “curly”. If after you have washed and air dried your hair, your hair is kinky, then the grade of your hair is considered to be “kinky”.

Knowing this information is very important when it comes to picking weave in hair that is a good match of you.

When we see a delightfully intricate hair design, we are often fascinated. Most likely the design has taken hours to complete. But, as an onlooker, it is difficult for us to determine where the design begins and ends. To us, it often simply looks like a very beautifully crafted work of art. As a stylist, one of the questions that I get the most is, “What is the difference between cornrowing hair and braiding hair?”

Do you know the difference between cornrowing and braiding? If not, don’t sweat it. Because most people do not know the difference between cornrowing hair and braiding hair.

Basically, the difference is a slight one in that cornrowing IS braiding (often called plaiting), but a braid is not always a cornrow. Lol. Don’t worry if I have confused you, let me clear this up…cornrowing is braiding the hair close to the scalp in a continuous design…like a row of corn. Get it?!

When someone says, “I’m going to get individual braids”, generally the hair is sectioned into less than 1 inch sections and braided away from the scalp. So the braider would section the hair starting at the scalp, then continue the braid away from the head.

There are many different regimes and processes that you can undertake in order to achieve this goal. But, one regime is most important...loving the hair that God gave you. Whether you have a partial hair weave, hair extensions or a lacefront wig, one must take care of one's own hair, also. Be careful not to damage your hair. Let it breathe sometimes. Get frequent hair shampoos and massages. Better yet! Massage your own scalp while sitting in traffic or watching TV.

Perhaps most importantly to having long & strong hair is eating right and exercising. Besides feeling good, exercising helps increase the blood circulation to the scalp.

Don't forget to condition your hair! We always lotion our skin after a shower, right? Well, why would we forget to "lotion" our scalps after washing our hair? We shouldn't. Conditioning your hair is a great way to prepare for a weave.

As stylist, I am often asked the question, “What is the appropriate age to begin relaxing my daughter’s hair?” My answer is always the same, “It depends on the child and her hair.” Unfortunately, I have known children who have gotten chemical relaxers as young as two years of age. As a stylist, I would never recommend such a thing. A child’s skin is very delicate. Moreover the head is a very sensitive region. The younger a child is, the more likely her “head cap” is still open. One must be very careful not to injure a child.

In determining which relaxer to use, the stylist must always perform a skin test on the subject. A skin test will determine if the subject is sensitive or allergic to the chemical. A skin test is performed by taking a very small amount of the chemical, less than a smidgen, and rubbing it on the inside of the forearm and leaving it there for 24 hours. If any redness at all occurs that you must not use the product on the subject.
